School Improvement Planning:
What's Missing?

School improvement plans are increasingly shaping strategic changes at schools and districts. As the National Initiative: New Directions for Student Support has progressed, we have heard growing concern about the limited nature and scope of school improvement planning. In particular, it has been stressed that current school improvement planning guides tend to perpetuate the marginalization of efforts to address barriers to learning and teaching.

Therefore, we have undertaken the task of analyzing school improvement guides and writing a policy report. We have put a draft of the report on our website as a next step in improving the work. We invite you to review the document and provide feedback for improving and effectively using it to stimulate discussion and enhance school improvement planning.

To this end, we have included a feedback form. Any and all feedback will be appreciated. You can send it back by email (smhp@ucla.edu) or by FAX (310/206-8716).

You can also use the feedback form or a direct email to let us know whether you want us to send you a hardcopy of the revised Executive Summary or the entire report (which includes the Executive Summary). The revised document, of course, will also be online.

We look forward to hearing from you.
